Imagine this…

You, your daughter, sister, or good friend is pregnant. You live in a remote village in Uganda and don’t know about the health care options available to you. You may not have full agency in making the decision on where you will deliver your baby, so you begin labor in your small mud hut. As your contractions get stronger you experience complications, you begin to bleed. Reaching a government-funded health center will take you up to 2 hours by foot. You and your baby are at risk. And once you reach the health facility, the quality you receive is may be poor.

Shocking fact

Approximately 6,000 women and 45,000 infants die each year in Uganda of preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Overall, you experience three delays that are responsible for the overwhelming majority of preventable deaths of mothers and babies:

I. Delay in the decision to seek care
II. Delay in access to care
III. Delay in receiving quality care.

We are here to change that. Let’s create partnerships that transform the quality of reproductive, maternal, and newborn care.

Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) has a holistic, sustainable approach addressing all three delays. As a locally led non-government organization, we work closely with government and civil society partners.

Over the past nine years, we have established the following innovations:

  • Community Outreach

  • Access to transportation

  • Improved quality of care

We are proud to announce that we have

  • Reduced institutional maternal & perinatal mortality by 74% and 44%,

  • Reduced referral time from health center to hospital from 3.5 hours to just 34 minutes,

  • Established 3 NICUs with a 97% survival rate.

Thank you

This would not have been possible without you. We are in the midst of our Annual Appeal with a goal to raise $150,000. Your support will allow us to expand our lifesaving work in 2024. We thank you for your support, trust, friendship, and partnership over the years.

Together, we have achieved so much, but still have a long way to go!

Let’s take BAMA’s innovations to the next level
