We have exciting news!

Dear friends and partners,

2024 marks 20 years since BAMA began its’ work building strong healthy communities in Uganda.

When we began, BAMA Co-founder Dr. Dan Murokora and I did not imagine the journey that we would travel over the next 20 years.

We began by screening over 3,000 women for cervical cancer, in communities that were decimated by the HIV pandemic. Cervical cancer is a major killer of women in sub-Saharan Africa. Screening has reduced cervical cancer by up to 80% in the developed world, but millions of women lack access leading to the deaths of over 300,000 women annually.

Dan and I knew that ensuring access to quality reproductive, maternal, and newborn care was key to building strong healthy communities.

Through our work together, a trusted friendship began, and Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) was born.

Over the past 20 years, we have been joined by many partners who have built BAMA into an innovative driver of change in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Thousands of donors like you have provided the seed capital, which has been leveraged many times over by international governments and foundations.

In our Annual Appeal 2023 alone, we have raised $103,000.

We are very grateful for your support and proud of all that has been achieved over the past 20 years. In this 20th Anniversary Year, we will celebrate our many accomplishments. On the 20th of every month, we will share exciting news about the progress your donations make possible, unpublished media, behind-the-scenes insights, and more. Stay tuned.

Watch this video for a teaser.

We look forward to seeing you at our planned online and in-person events throughout the year, especially Music for Mothers, scheduled for Tuesday June 4th in New York!

First and foremost, we will honor our past by envisioning a future where all women and children receive quality health care as a human right. In 2024, here are just a few of the innovative initiatives that your support will make possible:

Hospital to Home

We are adapting the Hospital to Home Project, which provides 6-months of home visits to support at-risk babies discharged from our Neonatal Intensive Units.

Expansion to the West

Thanks to the support of Enabel, we are expanding the Mama Rescue Project to Kasese and Kabarole. Mama Rescue links women in labor to lifesaving transportation through a simple mobile app.

We’ve made it to the finals

We’re in the finals of a major grant from the Gates Foundation. This would allow us to create a Health System Strengthening Model with AI technology.

Here’s to the next 20 years

Thanks to you, the past 20 years have been a journey of great discovery and transformation of the district health systems we partner with in Uganda.

We are determined to continue our work toward the day when quality health care for all women and children is achieved.

Thank you so much for your support,

Marc
